If you're shopping in any stores right now, you might have noticed that all the so called sun dresses are made of itchy, plastic-y, hot material. They look summery, but they'll bake you. Worry not, I've found a cotton summer dress that can get you through the whole summer for less than $20. Add a cropped cardigan or short-sleeve blazer for the office. Don some walking sandals, a fun sunhat and cute sunglasses for a day the fair. Dress it up with high heels, jewelry and a cute wrap for evenings. The possibilities are endless. It's well into sundress season, and I find I'm a bit short on suitable dresses. This summer is presenting long days of dashing from brunch to grad party to picnic to a backyard cookout to a bonfire. These days are fun, but an all-purpose dress is much more practical than trying to dash home to change between events. I like a dress with straps (and maybe even pockets!) that looks nice layered under a sweater. It gets bonus points if it looks equally cute with wedges or cute tennis shoes. I love my wedge sandals. I usually have several pairs because I buy them on clearance the summer before, but I've been been struggling to find a perfect fit. My wedges are falling apart so I'm in panic shopping mode. Wedge sandals are perfect for all sorts of summer activities. Unlike high heels, they won't sink into grass, dirt, sand or really hot asphalt. This might seem like a slightly odd pick of the week--sunglasses from Five Below, the store where everything is $5 or less. But, hear me out. Sunglasses get expensive. If you want fun sunglasses, they get even more expensive. If you want designer, this is not the post for you. If you, like me, lose, break, scratch, drop or otherwise harm sunglasses regularly, you need to check out Five Below. The range of sunglasses in the store isn't quite accurately represented on their website . I see a lot of much more grown-up looking pairs in the store. They have nearly every style you can imagine. I have a pair of heart sunglasses from Five Below, only the hearts on on their side so they're not the typical heart sunglasses, which is really cool. They have cat eyes sunglasses, blinged out sunglasses, sunglasses like the ones from Breakfast at Tiffany's , sunglasses in every bright color and print. Shop: Eynat Klipper Why We Love It: I'm not sure who decided to start making swimsuits that offered considerably less support and coverage than a demi bra and bikini panties, but their idea clearly took off. The stores are full of flimsy, poorly made suits. While summer is a great time for dresses, skirts, shorts and capris, I love breezy summer pants. The looks seems so elegant yet relaxed. I also love the easy of throwing on a great pair of pants with a cute sleeveless top knowing it will wear well through a hot summer day and pair great with a wrap or cardi come nightfall. Jael Paris touched on this a little bit back in 2008 when she asked about ankle socks , but I've been seeing more and more socks with sandals and open toe shoes so it warrants it's own post. The pairing has been on the spring runways for a while. I saw some people listing it as a trend the past two years, but now I'm really seeing it everywhere. Ankle socks, cuff socks, mid-calf socks, crew socks, knee socks, thigh-high socks and tights are becoming a constant pairing with sandals, peep toes and the like. Vogue Italia recently posted a street style slideshow of socks and sandals. I might not have a lot of company on this, but I love it. I love my sandals so I really like the idea of extending them behind the short Michigan summer. I've come to love scarves, which is strange for me because I don't like anything too close to my neck (like chokers or turtlenecks). I do love a great scarf though. I love how versatile they can be. A pretty silk scarf looks just as great around the handles of my purse, tied around my wrist, or in my hair as it does in a pretty knot around my neck. Crawling through the racks of suits at Target, jcpenny, Kohl's and such (I need a cheap suit for swimming laps), it seems like they all mostly carry the same suit: two triangles that turn into straps tied behind the neck and a pair of bikini bottoms. Sure, they have tankinis and a few one-pieces, but they mostly sell some variation of that suit and call it a halter, bikini, triangle or whatever. There are more of these suits than all the other styles combined. And I find that a little odd. Sure, some women look great in these suits. And its seems to be the most popular choice so people must really like them. But I've never fit into them. Even as a thinner teen who played sports, the suits didn't sit right or offer enough support. Plus, I love to actually swim, which would kill any of these suits right away. I don't have a good relationship with shorts. Actually, my thighs don't have a good relationship with shorts. I can't find any that fit probably and don't ride up because of my curves. Jael Paris wrote recently about culottes, and though the word makes me shiver because of my years in private school, a long, loose short seems like quite a good idea. I've been searching for such a pleated short for a while, and, thankfully, stores are obliging with more options than ever before. I love to layer so I love a good layering tank. During the summer I also love something comfy to wear while I water my herbs, read by the pool and do pilates. I need a soft, cool tank to sleep in too. I've found the one tank top that can do all of that for $9. The micro-ribbed tank from Target is made of cotton and modal (yay soft!) with just a bit of spandex to keep it's shape. It layers well; it can be dressed up and down; it comes in six colors ( exotic pink is pictured, underwater jade , blue whale , fresh white , concord grape , black ); and it's oh so comfy.

Nothing says chic summer casual like a pair of breezy linen pants. Sadly, linen is usually pretty expensive, but thanks to Target we can stroll to the local ice cream parlor in style with Merona Linen Pull On Pants for only $19.99. The drawstring waist is a very casual touch, but makes them a comfy choice for summer days. They come in a cropped version if that's your style. (I want to try pegging the crops for a harem pant look). You can also buy plus sizes . However, they aren't limited to the casual realm. If you can find a pair in black (which I've seen in stores but not online), you can iron a nice crease down the front and wear them to work paired with a structured summer blouse. Or try them with a shimmery evening cami and sky high heels for summer nights on the town. Since they come in S, M, L style sizing, I recommend buying the size down if you are in between sizes because these get baggy fast (I bought two pairs last year and regret not getting the smaller size)...

There may be a few weeks of summer left, but the stores are moving out their summer stock to bring in the fall fashions. I can't wait for fall--my favorite season, but I'm going to make the most of the last weeks of sunshine, picnics and pool parties. I'm also going to make the most of end-of-season super sales to stock up for next year. All of the finds in this $148.82 look are on sale. One of my many neurosis is that my shoes must make particular sounds. I either need a solid enough rubber tip that I can creep on silent cat-feet or the authoritarian click-click-click of your sternest middle school principal. Under no circumstances do I want THAWK-THWUCK-TRAWK announcing my arrival. Sound factor aside, I don't like my feet being as exposed as they are in flip-flops. Sure, it's great for heat management, but I always seem to end up skinning my feet in some bizarre way. It's a gift. The scant structure also helps me give in to the tendency to roll my ankles. That is not a gift, as I've noticed many women in the summer with their feet twisted oddly in sparse shoes. I'm endlessly occupied by racks of sunglasses in stores. I'll stand there and try on every pair. I only own one pair of sunglasses, but I adore them. I was lacking in summer bottoms and lacking in money this year so I had a make a very careful choice for some sort of wear-everywhere summer pant or shirt. I decided on grey linen pants . They're low maintenance, easy to wash, quick to hang dry, comfy and versatile. Also they only cost $20 at Target (less if you catch a sale). They can go from a weekend brunch to the office to the beach to a night out (all with the comfort of a drawstring waist)! I love the warmth of summer. I also appreciate air conditioning and breezy summer evenings. However, going from warm to cold means my summer outfits need an extra layer to keep me from freezing at night or indoors. Summer cardigans are the perfect solution.
