I know diamonds are supposed to be a girl's best friend, but I never been fond of them. April's birthstone is sparkly, sure, but that's not really my style. At least once a week, I post pictures of j ewelry to our Facebook page. While looking through that file the other day, I realized I have an Art Deco preference. The jewelry below is nearly 100 years old, but it's so simple yet detailed that you could wear it now without it screaming vintage . That's not too surprising consider that many classic jewelry styles from Chanel's pearls to Bulgari's snakes debuted at this time. Platinum, diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and sapphires were popular materials during the boom of the 1920s, but I'm fond of the era's fondness for less precious materials like onyx, jade and lapis. Today, the Fault in Our Stars opens in theaters. The book was beautiful. Yes, it's a sad story, but it's also funny and hopeful and, best of all, honest. When I graduated from high school, I recieved several keepsake necklaces with the year or a little graduation cap on them. They were very sweet gifts, but I never wore any of them. They were given to me on the day of my graduation party. I didn't open them until the next day so I had no graduation-related occasion left for which to wear them. And when else do you where such specifically themed jewelry? I would advocate that cash is the best grad gift (college is expensive!), but if you want to give something more meaningful (or a trinket in addition to the money), these necklaces will offer inspiration and encouragement for years to come. Snow queens have me thinking of pearls. True, crystals will be more on point, but pearls have a snowy luster. While they are every bit as dressy, I feel they are less demanding of your attention than shiny rhinestones. Any of these necklaces would look equally at home with a little black dress, grey tee and jeans, or a red sweater dress. As much as I've griped about the resurgence of 90s fashion, I greet the return of ear cuffs with open arms. I love funky, weird jewelry anyway. (If you follow our Facebook , you know I've been posting mad amounts of celebrity ear bobbles.) Why not wear earrings in a new (old) way? This round is bolder and flashier than my 1996 "Celtic" silver-toned cuff too. If you are considering buying into this trend, read the fine print. For those of you who've never taken the piercing plunging, many of these styles just hang or clip in place. Some styles, however, require a piercing. I hate finding cute earrings because I can't wear them. I got my ears pierced when I was nine, but after letting them grow back and piercing them again, they got more sensitive each year. I don't typically have a problem with metals, only metals that go through my ears. I'm not even sure if my ears are even still pierced because I don't have any gold earrings, which is the only type I can wear. So, no earrings for me. At least, no earring that go through my ears. Until I opened my stocking on Christmas. My mom got me these clip-on converters. You slide a post earring into them and wear it like a clip on! (They sell them for wire earrings too, but I haven't found as nice of a set online yet). I forgot to try them out on New Year's Eve, but I'm going to wear them out once the snow and ice in Michigan let me leave the house. There are two big trends in bracelets right now. One is to stack a bunch of tiny bracelets of mixed materials so that your arm looks like a flea market. The second is to spend a few hundred dollars on several similar yet vaguely different bangles. I would rather save my money by purchasing one statement bracelet, and my arm won't clack when I move either. Want! My style leans toward the ultra feminine, so I like to contrast that with odd jewelry. These green crystal earrings simultaneously remind me of bullets, lipstick tubes, and Superman's Fortress of Solitude. As a bonus, they match the emerald and mint we've all been buying this season. $53 for gold plated crystal earrings isn't a bad price either.
