When I graduated from high school, I recieved several keepsake necklaces with the year or a little graduation cap on them. They were very sweet gifts, but I never wore any of them. They were given to me on the day of my graduation party. I didn't open them until the next day so I had no graduation-related occasion left for which to wear them. And when else do you where such specifically themed jewelry? I love Christmas, but I don't so much love Christmas shopping. Don't get me wrong. I love to shop. I just don't love all the crowds or the fact that stores are opening so early on Thanksgiving that we're going to have to serve a holiday brunch so we can make it to the sales. Every year my mom asks me what I want and what I need. And each Christmas I have one box of fun and one box of practical. As I learn about fashion, I've become more and more interested in what is considered beautiful in the non-Western world. The non-hourglass figures, the clashing patterns, the wild colors all serve as a reminder that the fashion "rules" perpetuated by magazines are very subjective. When most people think of traditional Asian dress, they think of a cheongsam or a kimono, but Asia has much more breadth and depth as Tribal Asia: Ceremonies, Rituals and Dress demonstrates.
