The VMAs were Sunday and the Emmys were Monday. The fashion at these two event could not have been further apart, so I'm going to mash them together in one post. Why? Because the VMAs demand wildness, sex and questionable taste and the Emmys a tricky best-dressed-classic-yet-modern dance. Yet it's almost all boring and predictable. (Thank you Teyonah Parris and Kate Walsh for injecting the weekend with some memorable style!) Let's do some fashion math. We're trying to solve these questions: How much sex does a pop star have to sell if all the other pop stars are peddling the same sex? Can any outfit be shocking when it all feels so staged? What is it about actresses that makes them cling to fashion safety? Is it because singers are selling their personality to the crowd but actresses are selling a blank slate to a casting director? Being on a worst dressed list -- always a possibility if you're trying something new -- doesn't seem to affect a singer's sale...

Last year's punk theme ran up against more than one person who refused to deign to the night's honoree. This year's theme was Charles James, essentially the Christian Dior of America (a man whom Dior himself credited as his inspiration). If you love photographs of classic movie stars, chances are you've drooled over one of James' show-stopping dresses. If you have ever longed for a dress by Oscar de la Renta or Zac Posen, know that they owe a great debt to Charles James. This year's Oscar red carpet was less than exciting. The looks trended toward safe. When I look back to remember this awards season, I doubt any Oscar dresses will come to mind. However, that doesn't mean we didn't like a few things on the red carpet. And we noticed plenty of trends. This year goes to the guys. Jael and I both picked gents as favorites for reasons of 1) Color, and 2) Well, look at them. Chris Hemsworth donned burgundy while Jared Leto took the white jacket trend up a notch with a pop of red. Lady Gaga and Krisitin Chenoweth both brought art deco inspiration to the red carpet providing two of the more interesting dresses of the night. Sadly, most Oscar dresses are photographed still, but some of them can really move. I wasn't a huge fan of Lupita Nyong'o's dress (I think her previous showings this award season were much better), but I loved how it moved. The Grammys should be a place where people are expressive with their clothing. After all, musicians don't need to fade into a role the way actors do. Few of these people are fashion house faces. They are their brand. So why with the quiet? Are these people shy? (Is the wonderful Kacey Musgraves trying to disappear? You beat Taylor "Award Machine" Swift, girl! You were so cute at the CMAs!) Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are not shy. Macklemore went dressed all in green 'cept his slipper shoes, those are gold. Ryan Lewis swapped a leopard mink for houndstooth suit. Who else thinks it's cute when friends coordinate their outfits? Katy Perry was one of the few artists who tried something fun. Most people seem to not like her dress because it's too literal, but my issue is more that the parchment color is too close her skin tone. Two big trends emerged at the Golden Globes on Sunday: red and color blocking. (Three trends if you count the continuation of plunging necklines from last week's People's Choice Awards.) The red dresses ranged from blech to fabulous with a lot of zzz in between, but we positively swooned for color blocking. Some of it even clashed! We're so happy when people take risks with color. First of all, I am deeply disappointed by the lack of glorious jewelry at the event. While there were a few nude missteps,  I was happy to see that color is back. While neither one color nor one shape ruled the red carpet, one thing is for sure -- glamorous hair now means your regular hair but sleeker. The Women is a rather strange film. There are no men seen in the entire thing, yet it doesn't quite pass the Bechdel Test for a film that really represents women. Still, it's packed with tons of witty dialogue (even if the outdated ideas and back-stabbing women make me lose my ability to speak), and over the top fashion. The plot unfolds at the hands of a manicurist peddling Jungle Red nail polish, and in this film, it's a jungle out there for women who want to keep or get a man. Its not just the polish name thats appropriate, the town gossip (played by Rosalind Russell) gets a dress covered in eyes (as if she had trouble seeing everyone else's business). The fashion treat in the film is a technicolor fashion show. The rest of the film is in black and white, but the novelty of technicolor made the plot-dragging fashion sequence a big deal to audiences of the day. Unlike any other red carpet event we cover, the Met Gala has a theme. Also, guests sort of have a blank check to experiment and play with fashion. So it's confusing to me when so many women biff the opportunity and stick with a princess gown or simple cocktail dress. Enjoy playing dress up, ladies! The women who attended the Academy Awards this past Sunday looked nice to fabulous. The worst I would say is that maybe something was off with a couple people -- the color or the hair or what have you. Even so, I'm a little tired of websites, magazines and TV shows setting a fixed amount of worst dresseds and then shoving women in there. Oh no! Only three women were a mess or adventurous! Quick, find me two more! Catherine Zeta-Jones was too gold? Really? I'm fairly certain there were slubbier men you could have featured. Below are the red carpet looks we found the most interesting. The Grammy red carpet was tame this year. I imagine that's do to the lack of Nicki Minaj (I didn't see her) and Gaga. Also, they sent out a memo telling everyone to come covered up. Three ladies decided to cover up by wearing pants. Well, Beyonce and Janelle Monae wore pants, but I'm little worried that Kaley Cuoco is wearing leggings. Cool jacket though. CBS sent a memo to all the Grammy attendees this year begging them to not wear thongs or reveal "undercurvature of the breast." Not everyone listened, but what can the network do? Last year, when Zooey Deschanel began starring as Jess on New Girl , I wasn't quite sold despite how much a adore Zooey. The show took some time to fall into a rhythm and I wasn't sure I was a fan of Jess at first. Then she said this: “Okay, hey! I have something to say to you, man! I brake for birds.
