Cartoons Are Better Than Real Life

Image
In cartoons you can run off the edge of the cliff and you won't fall until you notice that you've run off the edge. You can survive anvils falling on your head. You can be a talking duck. You can teach countless children their state capitals with a silly song. Speaking of silly songs, you can inform the world that everyone has a water buffalo. You can even wear the exact same outfit everyday for all of time because you're drawn and not real. If you've always wanted to experience some of the cartoon life, JumpFromPaper can give you that 2D feel in the 3D world with their quirky, cool cartoon bags.  Which bag would you choose for your jump into TV land? Bags for Fall 2014

Image
A reader with a lust for bags asked us what will be the hottest handbag trend this fall. Honestly, nothing will be the trend. A few years ago, the runway was full of bags you could stuff the models in. This season, it's all over the map from clutches to backpacks, minimal to rococo. The only thing that will create a trend what we all decide to buy. While I'm sure young cool kids will be all about drawstring bucket bags to go with their grunge revival look, I'd like to suggest structured bags as the non-hipster look for Fall 2014. Unlike bucket bags which always look casual, a structured bag offers a counter point to the slouchy weekend wear that's currently popular. Plus, they look right with the long skirts and simple tops that are in season. If you're worried about looking too prim, buy a bag in an unexpected color, in a print, or with a whimsical detail. Top: black and white woven bow bag, Betsey Johnson on Amazon $98 neon yellow cross-body, ASOS $43.56 teal...

Love or Loathe: Bags That Look Like Not-Bags

Image
One of the cheekier trends to hit the fall runways was purses that look like something other than a purse: see Moschino's fast food containers or Chanel's grocery baskets. I've seen animals , lips , and several cupcakes . becca still wants a purse once featured on Project Runway that looks like a mace. The trend is very pop art, but I'm not a fan. It would have to be something that really enchants me, like a book clutch or a police call box, for me to jump on this bandwagon. Pizza boxes ? No, thank you. I'm not Kelly Kapowski cool . How do you feel about bags that look like something other than bags? What shape would they have to take to draw you into the trend, especially since the trend may not make it to spring?

Milan Fashion Week Fall Winter 2014: Accessories

Are you sitting down? You should be sitting down. With a few hilarious exceptions, Milan had the best bags and boots of Fall Winter 2014. They seem to be the only city that still believes in the sex appeal of shoes. Give me all the Dolce & Gabbana. New York & London Fashion Week Fall Winter 2014: Accessories

The good news is purses seem to be shrinking to a more reasonable size. Although, if Chanel sends body bags down the runway in a few days, you know people will be carrying them. The bad news is designers seem to not understand that Fall/Winter usually means cold. The runways have features a weird number of sandals. Not just the peep toe boots of yore but full on sandals worn with socks. Back to good news: jewelry. Drool. While we work on our Oscar post, tell us what you think of the shoes, bags, jewelry, sunglasses, and other accoutrements from New York and London Fashion Week. Love or Loathe: The Clutch

Image
It's party season, and that means party dresses. Party dresses mean you usually swap out that perfectly sensible but heavy everyday bag for a sleek little clutch. But the clutch has problems. Obviously, it's small. That's the point. But sometimes a cell phone, a credit card, and one lipstick isn't enough. I need kleenex. I need a nail file. Eyedrops. Cough drops. Mints. Most importantly, I need to be able to stuff a book in my bag so that when the party goes horribly, I can find a quiet place to read. (I don't party well.) Big Buddha "Adriana" Clutch $30 on Amazon The second big problem with the little clutch is that unless you get one with a wrist strap, you have to carry it. If you party better than I do, you may also lose track of it after dancing or other festive mayhem. But brush those concerns aside. Clutches are cute! And the modern clutch looks more like a cool wallet than the stiff, sparkle fest of the 80s. I kind of want a million of them...

Pick of the Week: Perfectly Adorable Bag

Image
Mod Cloth's "New To The Block" bag is so cute, it should come stuffed with raspberry cream filled cupcakes and an automatic glitter cannon to shoot at sneery people. Can you fit a hardcover Harry Potter novel in it? No. (Sorry, Roommate.) But you can carry your wallet, lipstick, lotion and keys without a problem. Books aside, the only other downside I see here is that frankly this purse is a gateway accessory. Once you start toting it around, you'll feel the need to get some dainty lace gloves, pearls, and a petticoat. Wait, that's not a downside at all!

Poll: Ditch Your Purse?

Image
On the one hand, I need my purse in the summer. becca already talked about how summer requires her to upsize to a tote for all her warm weather necessities. (My necessities do not include a Kindle because books have pages, thank you very much.) On the other hand, I don't want a strap touching me. It's so, stinkin' hot. So hot. I also don't like carrying my purse around with me at summer events, but I'm too paranoid to put it down. I would love to just ditch the purse and carry my goodies in my pockets, but not all of my summer clothes have roomy pockets. Grr! First world problems! poll by twiigs.com

Pick of the Week: Colorblock Bags

Image
Guess' color block bag , in shades of aqua, pink sand and citron, is very Summer 2012 while still making me think of both 1950s sock hops and parties in 1980s Miami. (Or those things as they are represented in tv and movies since I've experienced neither.) This particular style is the largest in the line and rings up at $125 at Macy's, but there are quiet a few styles. The bowler is $118, small handbag is $75 and the wallet is $38. All the bags are available in brown color block, black and white.

6 Summer Carry-Alls

Image
While winter has a lot of accessories, summer seems to need the most supplies. Sunscreen, water, a wrap or cardigan for over-air conditioned buildings, sunglasses, and maybe a spare pair of shoes for spontaneous long walks on nice days (or even a hat to keep away the sun). There are too many things I want to carry around. That's on top of my wallet, phone, keys, Kindle, iPod, notebook, lotion, hand sanitizer, and other "necessities." These totes are large and lightweight enough to tote of my warm-weather wares. 6 Summer Carry-Alls by fashionbeccafabulous Zipper bag $80 - modcloth.com J Crew beach tote $50 - jcrew.com Woven handbag $38 - macys.com Forever 21 striped handbag $11 - forever21.com Levi's Nautical Canvas Tote - Red and Natural - Bags $58 - levi.com Relic® Heather Large Tote - jcpenney $40 - jcpenney.com

Colorful Bags for Summer

I'm still on a bit of a neutral dress kick . Not just white but also nude, black and grey. Don't worry! I'm not swearing off color. I'm excited about bright accessories, purses especially. So let's shop Endless. turquoise and yellow shoulder bag, BCBGeneration "Charlie" $88 sunset floral hobo, Lucky $199 mint satchel shopper, Fossil $188 yellow and purple colorblock shoulder bag, Hobo International $183.40 baby blue and metallic cutout, Ivanka Trump $175 pink colorblock crossbody bag, Big Buddha $74.95 green and turquoise flower tote, Mar Y Sol $98 striped satchel, Juicy Couture $198 paisley tote, Hadaki $120 orange and marine blue colorblock bag, Melie Bianco $81.24

Touch of Color

Neon can be a hard trend to get in on, but there are ways to dip your toe in the water. One way neon is popping up this season is in color blocking. Tan, grey, white or black with an accent of hot pink, neon yellow or even sky blue feels so fresh. Finding the Perfect Purse

Image
I know a lot of women who are purse addicts. They have more purses than I have individual shoes. I'm not one of those women. Don't get me wrong, I love bags. I'm just really picky. When my favorite purse fell apart in 2006, I spent almost two years looking for a replacement. That replacement, pictured here, is still my everyday purse. I've had a few others in that time, but they aren't perfect like the one I've been carrying since late 2007. (It's 2012. Yikes!) This bag has almost everything I require: Three main compartments--two large, one small Zipper closures on all the main compartments (or I will lose stuff) Pockets on the inside for my phone and sunglasses Must be cute (which is hard to find since my organization requirements only occur in "old lady" purses). Can't be too heavy when empty (because I will pack it) Must comfortably fit a wallet that doesn't close, a change purse, a card holder, a smart phone, sunglasses, a notebook and...

Love or Loathe: Patchwork Bag

Image
Seeing as I'm not a patchwork fan, I shouldn't like this Tylie Malibu "Prana" tote , yet it bears a world traveler charm. (As I'm trying to save money, I can't travel anywhere this year. Instead, I'm trying to read more books set overseas. The list to read so far includes Reading Lolita in Tehran , Three Cups of Tea , Becoming Madame Mao , and Hitchhiking Vietnam .) This large bag almost looks like something you'd pick up in a market in Nepal after your back pack strap gives out (shakes angry fist at memory). That's also my problem with the bag. I don't like it enough for it to not be a souvenir. I couldn't even see myself buying something like this from one of those companies that helps women in the third world and developing countries sell their crafts. The bag, for me, needs a memory attached to it. I certainly don't like it enough to spend over $200 on it. How do you feel about this bag, about patchwork and about things that look ...

Every Day's a Party Clutch

Image
Party clutches have always seemed like a waste of money. They look great, but are so expensive for the size. $143 for a stiff, shiny box? Really? If you're in the market for a new everyday bag (assuming you want a bag and not a suitcase), try one with a little sparkle. It will add interest to your outfits, and you can keep using it for evening events. Bourne's "Jennifer" convertible clutch has actual depth to it (take that envelope clutches!), has a strap option, is made of real leather and is nicely trimmed in a reptile print. It's currently $83 on Endless, half off the original price.  If you don't want your everyday bag to be so festive, tuck the party in your purse. A couple years ago, I bought a studded wallet that's large enough to pull out of my everyday bag and use as a clutch for special occasions. (It's on our Facebook page if you want to take a gander.) Style & co.'s geometric gold wallet , now on sale for $19.99 at Macy...

Project Design: Everyday Handbags

Image
Last night on Project Accessory, the designers were challenged to create an everyday bag for real women. The designers had to accommodate all of the tiny, picky details the women required in their handbags. I found it interesting (and a bit disheartening) to watch the designers struggle to create these ideal handbags. Perhaps that explains why I can't find the perfect bag in stores--even custom made bags struggle to live up to needs and expectations. Diego, a purse designer, ultimately won with the pictured design because of his attention to detail, his client and expert skills finishing a bag. Here is a round up of handmade bags from Etsy. Many of these designers take custom orders so you might be able to get your perfect bag even if these aren't quite it. Which bag most fits your style? What do you look for in a "perfect" bag? Pick of the Week: Fall Bag

Image
I've been trying to write copy for the "Jasmine" shoulder bag from Melie Bianco for half and hour. For a while, I had a text block of prettyprettyprettypretty. The orange and brown one is officially the color "pumpkin," and you know how I feel about teal for fall . The shape is bold yet classic and the gold hardware is the perfect accent. I can picture this with boots, jeans and a blazer or with your favorite sweater dress.

Crossbody Fall Bags
