16 Wedding Guest Dresses (With 9 Under $100)

Image
Wedding season is coming up. becca's going to a ton. So are her friends. So are my coworkers. I don't have any weddings on the docket for this year, but I still like shopping for pretty dresses to wear to weddings. They make good date dresses. In June, my husband and I will be celebrating our eighth anniversary. We have lunch together every day. We take walks and hold hands. We have date nights once a week. Some people think it's silly to behave this way. "My husband and I grew out of that years ago," they say. But my husband and I are practicing being cute old people. Weddings aren't happily-ever-afters; they are beginnings. You have to fall in love everyday if you want to see it through to the end. Now, schedule some time, get dolled up, and have a date night with someone you want to fall in love with every day.* yellow eyelet sheath dress, Old Navy $37 pale green pleated dress, Mod Cloth $130 navy sexy sheath dress, ASOS $75 aqua draped faux wra...

Under the Gunn Season 1 Finale Recap

Image
Sorry this is a week late, but I was out of town for the finale. I've finally settled in to watch it though, and it was a pretty good showing. I still wish designers had more time for finale collections like in the old days of Project Runway , but this group turned out a good bunch of fashion. All of the collections are below. You can click on the image to view it larger. Asha did a good job. I liked a lot of her individual pieces, but I agree with the judges that it wasn't a cohesive vision. Also, Asha's attention to detail still isn't quite there. She's a strong designer, but I think she has a way to go. Oscar wowed with his collection. The clothes had a stunning presence on the runway. People even clapped throughout his collection rather than just at the beginning and the end. He does beautiful work, and for his final collection he was able to break from his more matronly looks and create some cool clothes. His wasn't my favorite collection, but I don...

Etsy Shop of the Week: A Likely Story

Image
Shop:  A Likely Story Why We Love It:  It's a bit of a mystery how this shop hasn't been featured several times as Etsy Shop of the Week. We've used it a few times in Project Design posts, but it's never had it's own feature, which is odd because Jael and I are lovers of books and words. This Etsy shop has everything you need to add a bookish touch to any outfit. Typewriter keys make up the bulk of the jewelry for a vintage look that just stepped out of the pages of a classic. There are also cute illustrations for even more adorable, book-ish fun. Pick of the Week: Floral Painting Jacket

Image
Today was jacket weather. Then it was too hot to move. Then it was steamy and raining with a harsh wind. Last week, it snowed. Looks like I'll still be carrying a jacket with me for another month. That's less of a let down with this floral painting bomber jacket . I'm not even into florals, and I love this print. I reminds me of Japanese tattoos, Van Gogh's Cherry Blossoms , and Monet's Waterlilies all at once. Unlike some other bomber jackets I've seen lately, this one is a breathable cotton blend. It would look equally lovely with a tutu or jeans. It's only $26 on Amazon, but the shipping is a little high as the item is coming from Korea. Still worth it for a classic style with a beautiful print.

Tips For Saving Money On Prom

Image
My coworker and her daughter have been spending their last few weekends looking for a prom dress. Daughter wants a $150 gown that would need additional tailoring. Mom is looking for something for $20. Factoring in the dress, shoes, purse, hair and makeup, prom can cost a girl and her parents well over $200. Yikes! That's a lot for a night of emotional turmoil and disappointment. (Sorry, was my disillusion talking?) Here are a few ideas to bring that price down a bit. Hold a dress swap. When my boss was a teenager, all the girls where she worked brought in their formals to trade. Everyone left with a new, free dress. Suggest this to your local school district, your church, or some other organization. This would look lovely with a blouse in your favorite color. ( Forever 21 $25 ) On a smaller scale, try Craigslist . "Will trade size 4 pink party dress for size 4 dark blue gown." Skip the new accessories. Did you get a bag and shoes for homecoming? Use them a...

State of the Denim Address

Image
I need new jeans. My black jeans bit the dust this week and I can tell that my other two pairs of jeans aren't long for this world. Sadly, I don't think I will be able to buy any new jeans. They don't sell them anymore. They just sell leggings in various shapes. Actually, that's an insult to leggings. I have leggings that offer more structure and less spandex than most of the jeans I've come across. I get the appeal of stretch denim for manufacturers. They just make one style of jeans, make it super stretchy and let us all pull them on like we do tights. There's another bonus to leggings. They are easier to get off than most of the jeans I've tried on. But leggings aren't pants. I need actual pants. Aside from the poor fit and the constant tugging because the jeans creep up or down, stretch denim is getting so stretchy it has new problems. Do we really need jeans that give us camel toe? If you are a fellow member of the thick thighs club, do you re...
