Love or Loate: Barrettes

Image
Barrettes were all over the spring runways... Do not want. All I can think of is Elaine Benes and her fizzy poof pulled back from her face with a sad little clip. They never held my hair well, even at it's curliest, but they always managed to rip out a chunk in the hinge. I can imagine a black or tortoiseshell clip working well accenting a French twist, but as a ponytail replacement? And the more elaborate barrettes, like these Cuteberry barrettes available at yesstyle.com , are way too twee to get near my baby face. Are you excited about the resurgence of the barrettes or will you keep the hinges off your head?

Pick of the Week: BUNNIES!!!

Image
I am Mocha, Captain of the Cute Army. This is my minon, Kinkajou. I like dandelions. We have infiltrated your ranks and claimed one of your own, turning her into a cooing-gooing mess of relaxation. She brings me om noms and rubs my nose. She is but our first victory in the quest for world domination. YOU WILL KNEEL BEFORE MY FUZZY WUZZY GLORY!! To mark our conquests, we will attire you in sweaters bearing our crest: a rabbit sister holding a strawberry the size of her torso . Strawberries! Where?! I love strawberries. They make my lips red, then I have to wash them with my wittle bitty paws. Indeed, Kinkajou. The humans would be wise to bring berry offerings to their new masters. It's only a matter of time before they all fall oohing and ahhing before us and give up their nuzzles.

Project Runway: The Decoy Shows

Image
In case any of you are suffering from Project Runway recap withdrawal, fear not. I have one final recap for you. To avoid spoilers, Project Runway continues to allow several eliminated designers to show at fashion week as decoys so the media won't be able to predict the finalists or winner--not that anyone could have predicted the winner. (The Tim Gunn picture is just for fun since we won't have any more Uncle Tim photos until next season.) Christopher I continue to forget Christopher was even a contestant this season. He made it considerably far, but I have no memory of anything he made. When I saw his name on the list of shows, I thought maybe it was from another season. His collection is equally forgettable. The clothing is nice, but the proportions seem off. It also seems off-the-rack. Actually some of it looks like it came off the clearance rack at Target. April I'm excited that her collection wasn't all black. Her macabre feel still came through in the paler pal...

Artistic Inpirations: Japanese Prints

Image
As I mentioned in my trend post , print mixing in Japan isn't a "so this season" thing so much as a a cultural art form. Case in point, the layers of bold prints in Japanese woodblock prints of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The woman in this piece titled "True Beauties" balances her boldness with graphic black and white over a bright red print. Inspired by the model, I finished the look with blue accessories. Japanese Prints: Checks Over Floral by Fashion Me Fabulous featuring a floral print dress Pick a theme. The panel below features three actors wearing what most people would consider a mess of patterns. But the equal levels of boldness tied together with the same color create harmony from cacophony. We think of this as the Salvador Dali approach to dressing . For an outfit with the same feel, I picked odd prints with a color theme and accessorized with equally grabbing pieces. Open Poll: Hair Dye

Image
I've never dyed my hair. In college, I put a temporary, two-week tinting mousse in my hair that turned my natural highlights red, but that's as far as I've gone. Mostly, I haven't dyed my hair because I really like my hair color. Also, my hair is very dark brown so I'd have to lighten it for most hair color to do anything more than just tint it some. Besides, it seems like a lot of work to keep up a fake hair color. Yesterday , I linked to piece by a fashion blogger who is starting to get grey hair in her 20s . I also have some grey hair (most of which I suspect is due to constantly hitting the same part of my head on my bunk in college since that's where the grey appears). It drives me crazy when people try to plunk a grey hair if they notice it. Please leave my hair on my head. Thank you. I'm not sure why this is an abomination, but many women think so and wish I would just dye my hair since I'm too young to have any grey. (I suspect more women have gr...
