Project Runway S10 E5: To Scream Or Not To Scream

Image
As an episode of over-dramatic, trap-'em-'till-they-crack reality television, this week's episode was excellent. As a fashionable and memorable episode of Project Runway , it bored me to death. I don't like watching people fight on TV so watching Elena just made me shut down. I also don't like watching people whine so Raul grated on my nerves. Ugh. Anyway, the designers were challenged by Nina to create a capsule collection of work wear for the Marie Claire at Work magazine supplement.  They had to do this in teams and follow up the workroom drama by collaborating on a fashion shoot. Also, no clear team leaders were assigned. Let the games begins. Two teams were chosen, one of five designers and one of six. Team 5: Nathan, Ven, Christopher, Fabio, Gunnar Team Five mostly worked together well. They had some disagreements about colors, and Gunnar felt like he was being made to tailor their ideas instead of make his own, but little drama came out of that beca...

Etsy Shop of the Week: Hi Octane Jewelry

Image
Shop: Hi Octane Jewelry Why We Love It: This weekend is the Woodward Dream Cruise. It's a Detroit tradition for all the classic and awesome cars in the Motor City to congregate on and around a 16-mile stretch of Woodward Ave that spans eight cities. There will be over a million people there to see over 40,000 cars. Many people even dress for the era of their classic car. I don't have a classic car, but if I wanted to accessorize for the event the auto-themed jewelry from Hi Octane would be the perfect fit. Pick of the Week: Prada-esque Flame Shoes

Image
When Prada sent a car-themed show down the runway, I fell in love with the accessories, especially the shoes. I'm from the Metro-Detroit area, the Motor City, and I've worked as an automotive writer in the past. I adore cars. And I adored these flame shoes , which originally came with a $1,100 price tag. My brother has cars that cost less than that. In fact, the current bargain clearance price tag of $495 is still more than some of my brother's cars have cost. .  . Jael recently found this adorable pair of flame wedges at Modcloth.com . They aren't as fierce or dramatic as the Prada version, but I think they are actually cuter and more versatile. I can see pairing these with everything from skinny jeans to a sun dress. Modcloth is selling the red version pictured left for $49.99. I found the same shoes in red, blue and black for $22 at Urbanog.com (an online shop I'm unfamiliar with). The only bummer about these shoes is that they don't come in my size...

Product Review: Pretty Nails Polish Remover

Image
I love to do my nails, but taking off the polish is a chore. This is why I love Pretty Nails polish remover. Pretty Nails comes in a squaty tub filled with a sponge. The sponge is slit in the middle so you can dip your finger(s) and soak/sponge off the polish. There is also a little fuzzy sponge on a stick for cleaning up stubborn polish on the edges of your nails and removing toenail polish.  It works great, and doesn't require any messy cotton balls. It's a bit pricier than regular polish remover, but the sponge lasts for quite a while so I dump out the used polish remover when it stops working well, rinse out the sponge and refill it with fresh polish remover. I can do this two or three times before I need to buy a new tub. The only trouble with this remover is that very dark polishes will stain the sponge, but it's mostly just a looks issue. The polish remover still works well. I prefer the Non-Acetone version (pictured here), but it also comes in Regular (with ...
