$150 Challenge: Mosquito Repellent

I'm being eaten alive. By mosquitoes. Not to gross you out, but I don't just get mosquito bites--I get mosquito welts. Huge ones. I'm allergic, very allergic. Therefore, I must dress to repel the evil vampiric insects. Short of walking around with a personal mosquito net* to avoid the nasty buggers, experts suggest covering up as much as possible in loose light-colored clothing.

Covering up in the heat is hard. Stick to lightweight fabrics that breath like this silk and cotton blouse and these cotton and bamboo socks. Find lightweight jeans and fabric shoes. Mosquitoes strike most at dusk and dawn so wear layers that can be removed in the heat of the day and replaced as night falls.

Light colors and loose clothing are equally important to covering up. Mosquitoes are less likely to be attracted to light colors, which are also cooler than heat-absorbing darks. Avoid tight fitting clothes because mosquitoes can still bite through them. Plus, tighter fits tend to be warmer.

Romantic Pleated Woven Shirt, Forever 21 $24.80
St. Tropez Trouser Jean, Quicksilver $29.40
Sheer Burnout Tank, Delia's $15.50
Belted Bucket Bag, Urban Outfitters $39.99
Striped Mary Jane Flat, Wet Seal $6
Bamboo Crew Sock 3-pack, Sock Dreams $13

*Picture Note: The top picture of Kate Moss wearing a dress made out of recycled mosquito nets was created to raise funds to tackle malaria. The donation page for this particular project no longer exists, but you can help end malaria by donating a net to Compassion International's Bite Back campaign. The above outfit is only $128.69. A $10 donation would still keep this look under $150.
