The New York Times thinks the Material Girl has failed not just to reach icon status with her wardrobe for her latest album's promotion, but that she has failed to be even interesting. Jezebel agrees to a point. Having been reading about books fashion icons and fashion as social commentary, both of which frequently pointed to the importance of Madonna's various looks, I've been wondering where she can go. Menswear, fetish gear, underwear as outer-wear, and even rural Americana are no longer shocking in the context of pop. She broke those barriers. How should the nearly 50-year-old Madge reinvent herself?
