New York Fashion Week SS13: Vera Wang, J. Mendel, Suno, Ruffian

Image
Vera Wang has a tendency to over do her layers and ideas, but this year she turned in one of her prettiest collections ever. She still played with layers and shape, but in a sleeker way. She brought interest to the white portion of the collection with laces and textures. Then she punched up the interest with colorful prints and shining metallics. J. Mendel is known for pretty dresses, but he took this collection far beyond that with vivid colors, new shapes, more separates and swirly prints. Many pieces are sure to appeal to his regular clientele while establishing a new, more varied costumers. Suno played with prints and layers for spring. They also ventured into evening wear for the first time. Their remixed shirt dresses, irridescent fabrics, and vibrant prints made for an interesting collection full of signature pieces. Ruffian packed in the trends for playful collection with a mix of ladylike and sporty, home decor-inspired prints, vibrant pastels, ...

Project Design: Sheer Tops

Image
Sheer is a popular trend for fall. It's a great trend for layering (please wear something under a sheer blouse), and layering is a great way to dress for changing whether. I love a sheer blouse because it can transform summer top and dresses for slightly cooler days and it cane give an airy dimension to long-sleeve tees and other cool-weather clothes. They are also great for covering up a strapless dress or top for weddings, church or chilly nights. Where sheer top brings you sheer joy? Love or Loathe: Bear Skirt

Image
Context can be everything with clothing. The bear hat I posted about last year is bad for work but fun for a festival. Uggs are good for winter, not for wearing with a miniskirt in LA in August. So what is the context of this plushie bear skirt ? Kindergarten teacher? Harajuku girl? Katy Perry? In a fire? At nearly $250, can it even have a context?

New York Fashion Week SS13: Anna Sui, Jason Wu, Marc Jacobs

Image
Anna Sui dabbled in steampunk with a mix of rock and roll and Victorian themes. She hit many themes and trends for the season like varied prints--animal, graphic, floral and prints that look like they came from upholstery or wallpaper. The collection also offered up a dose of whimsy with technicolor hair, girly frocks and cat-ear caps. Jason Wu has left his diplomatic First Lady clothes in the closet and dragged our a new leather and lace persona. With excellent tailoring and the classy touch Wu brought to Michelle Obama's wardrobe, most of this came out sexy and chic rather than 50 Shades of Grey .   Marc Jacobs put on an industrial circus. The stark black and white prints and strong stripe theme gave the collection a cool, edgy vibe while the ruffled cuff and collars (and the Mickey Mouse shirt) brought playfulness and daring to the collection. New York Fashion Week SS13: Rodarte, Chris Benz

Image
Who: Rodarte What it made us think of: Peter Pilotto playing D&D. What we liked: shoes, print mix... What we didn't: This felt like someone else's show but without cohesion. The leather fringe jackets, laced up leather pants, and potholder embroidery looked tacky. Who: Chris Benz What it made us think of: An elderly lady who is trying to get creative with her closet. What we liked: texture, playful use of sheer and print layers, bags, heels, glittery stripes, altered men's shirts What we didn't: flatforms, dowdiness Visit our Facebook for more fashion week coverage.
