Project Design is our own friendly competition where we put together collection of independent designers for you to rate on your very own imaginary runway. This week's feather fest has made me realize that actual feathers can be a bit difficult to store and care for. They are also a little tricky to clean. I have an embarassing confession: I really like something Britney Spears wore. For years, I've been coveting her shrug from the cover of Greatest Hits: My Prerogative . The shoulders and collar look like black goat hair, but I'd love to have a version of that collar with black feathers. When I went to the Michigan Renaissance Festival , I met Jacklyn Grageda, the fun lady who runs Feathers For Pleasure. She makes hats, pins, jewelry, and anything else your feather loving heart could desire. She even made this delightful black feather collar ($300). It's dramatic and maybe a little Vegas. I have know idea where I'd wear it, but I want it. I've been eying feather hair clips since I saw Kenley wearing them on Project Runway . There are some lovely and rather affordable feather pieces available on Etsy and few other places, but money is too tight to justify even that purchase right now. Once I saw the headbands Jael Paris made , I decided to try making the clips myself instead of buying them. All of my supplies were easily found at Walmart: Feathers: 77 cents a bag Thread: 89 cents a spool (match thread to felt) You could use glue too. Felt: 20 cents a sheet (match felt to either feathers or hair) Hair clips: $1 a package or free is you already have them Total: $3.63 with a ton of supplies left over I bought white feathers and brown feathers. I like the brown feathers better but they were smaller and harder to sew than the white ones. There were also only a few pretty feathers in the bag of most blah, flimsy feathers. In keeping with the feather theme this week on FMF, the Etsy shop of the week is full of fabulous feathers, hats and other accessories. Satanica on Etsy creates some stunning pieces. Her resume includes designer, fabricator, puppet maker, fire eater, performance artist, writer, stunt woman and now milliner. With experience like that it's no wonder she has a flair for the fantastic with the best quality and craftsmanship. From hats, fascinators and hair clips to jewelry and fire umbrellas this shop has it all and at some of the best prices I've seen. The cocktail hat fascinator pictured here is only $45.99.
