Pre-Fall 2014

Fashion week is like an all you can eat buffet where in you absolutely gorge yourself on gowns and coats and shoes. Haute Couture (next week!) is certainly the rich dessert, like fudge cake with whiskey butter sauce. Following my food thoughts, that makes Pre-Fall an appetizer -- tiny pinwheels and pears with brie. I'm a little hungry now, so you look at these shots from Pre-Fall while I raid the kitchen.

Are you ready for my tap-dance?

I realize that the fashion industry is big business and that decisions are made after much careful thought. I know that there is a reason why fall fashion shows go on display before spring. I just don't know what that reason is.

Because of trickle-down fashion?

Technically, fashion shows are for the buyers of department stores. So the buyer from Nordstrom or Bloomingdale's will go to Calvin Klein's show and say "I want 500 of look five. Could you make look 9 in green? If you make the skirt for look 15 longer, I would be interested in purchasing it for my store." After taking orders, the clothes have to be made. This is why the 6 month lead time and also why something that is so popular on the runway may not show up in stores.

October is the perfect month for anyone who loves a dramatic look. Because of Halloween, you can get away with more in the makeup department than you can the rest of the year.
