My Must Have: Antique Jewelry

For over 25 years, my parents owned the county's only pawnshop. We had musical instruments, electronics, and weapons, but we specialized in jewelry. As a result of decades of staring at the variety of treasures in our cases, I developed a deep love for the craftsmanship involved in antique jewelry. From hand-cut diamonds to delicate platinum basketwork, modern jewelry couldn't hold a candle to these beauties. Pre-WWII jewelry was a particular favorite -- Art Deco geometry, Art Nouveau fantasy, and Victorian decadence.

The hand-cut gems, the delicate gold work, and the item's history all converge together to make antique jewelry special. And a special item can provide a simple outfit with a pop.

The South Bend farmers' market has an antique jewelry stand by the big coffee place where you can buy caramel apples. You probably already knew that, though! I found a gorgeous opal ring there once.
