Personality

Sonya Tayeh, a choreographer on So You Think You Can Dance, has made me rethink hair. When I first saw her, she was wearing a loud floral top clearly purchased at a thrift shop for all the 90s shoulders involved and that glorious hair -- shaved sides, a mohawk, and that stupendous rooster tail. Her hair contains more personality than most people have in their entire bodies.

Of course, I'm not going to run out and have my hair styled like hers because that would not represent me and I'm not a modern dancer either. However, I can't stop thinking that maybe we don't take full advantage of our hair as a style statement. Color, cut, texture -- it's all there to be played with, emphasized and changed, but most of the women I see around me either don't bother or wear cloned head suits.

I'm currently growing out my bangs (not fast enough), and plan to do something sassy with my hair. I have no idea what. Maybe I'll just go back to my super short cut of a few years ago, but it needs to be sassy instead of bored. (I swear I can almost hear it breathe a blasé sigh.)

What do you want your hair to say about you?

Thrilled to hear someone else feel the way I do about hair. I find so much hair around me so boring and lacking personality. Mine is really short, choppy and asymmtetrical. I'm sure it can be improved upon, but my favorite thing about it is that it's different than just about anything else I see walking down the street.

Japan is a hair personality gold mine. If I were allowed to take photos of students, I'd post some for you.
