Save or Splurge: Winter Coats

It's that time of year again. The time when leaves turn colors and fall. The time for pumpkin spice lattes. And the time to start thinking about winter coats.

What to spend on a winter coat can be a tricky question. It all depends on what you are looking for. I splurged last year on a classic black skirted coat with big buttons and lovely bell sleeves. It's very me, yet very professional. It is also warm and skirt friendly, which is a must-have for me. A coat like this is worthy of a splurge. I do think most everyone needs a professional to dress coat like this.

However, winter coats are as diverse as people. If you want a cute puffy coat or some other coat trend just for fun, save your money. I found the cutest little puffy coat at H&M several years ago that I just love. It's even pretty warm for an inexpensive coat.

That being said, warmth is also a factor. If you live in a climate that turns arctic in the winter. The cute pea coats at Target probably won't keep you warm since they're pretty thin. Warmth is also a consideration if you walk to work or ride chilly public transit. If you don't face arctic wind or spend most of your time dashing from house to car to office to car to store to house than you may be able to save some funds on function and focus on form.

Also, if you're up for the dry cleaning and tailoring that comes with it, you make be able to go for the ultimate save by finding a coat at a thrift or resale shop. I wanted an all-purpose, super warm coat for winter and I just found one for $9 at Salvation Army. I can't beat that kind of save.

My mile long arms dictate to get whatever works no matter the cost. If I find something that has extra long sleeves on sale, Yay! If it's not on sale and seems like it will dissapear before a sale comes, splurge it is.

I'd say a little bit of both. I'm not going to waste money on a coat that won't keep me warm, but I'm not going to waste money on an overpriced coat either. I'd watch for sales and second-hand items... or ask for one for Christmas like me ;)

I endured a wool coat that was so old the elbows were shiny and the cuffs threadbare. It was worth the wait for end of season sales. Coats are so seasonal and so bulky, you can find great bargains in February and March.

Happy 10th Anniversary... and goodbye.

October is the perfect month for anyone who loves a dramatic look. Because of Halloween, you can get away with more in the makeup department than you can the rest of the year.
