That Doesn't Match

A women approached me in Target a few weeks ago to inform me I didn't match. I don't think she meant to be rude because she said it in the whisper tone women use when telling you that you have something in your teeth or the tag is sticking out of your shirt. I don't remember exactly what I was wearing, but it probably involved my dark blue purse or sweater and something black. Apparently, I had broken a color rule. Probably the "no dark blue with black rule."

Frequently on What Not to Wear, I've seen fashion convicts tell hosts Stacey London and Clinton Kelly "that doesn't match." Stacey responds, "It doesn't match. It goes." To the women in Target I whispered, "I know, but it goes together."

I've seen many women who will buy a shirt that mixes green and purple. They wear it with black, gray or some other neutral and consider themselves matched. However, those same women will question my choice to pair green shoes with my purple dress.

Wearing a bold color doesn't mean you have to pair the color with a neutral or denim. Try a brighter, bolder color. Find your favorite clothing item that mixes colors and try mixing those same colors on your own. Buy bright shoes and jewelry to wear with your purple top. You may be surprised by how chic it can look.

You were nicer than I would have been. Much nicer... Knowing where you live, I can just imagine the type. I'd have had a few choice words for her.

I recently went shopping with my mother. She picked up this lovely jacket at Banana Republic that was marked 60% off, but she put it back. "I don't have anything to wear it with!" she said. It's grey!!! Everything goes with grey!
